"Passing Storm" by Mark Ditzler

$4,850.00

Kiln-formed glass, hot worked cane, phosphors, xenon gas, wood, paint, electronics. 22" wide x 26" tall x 7" deep, 20 lbs. 2019. Created for “Currents 2020” at Schack Art Center, this is a large plasma panel made of fused glass. Plasma is ionized gas that glows faintly under low pressure, or forms bright tendrils under higher pressure. The cloud is composed of my signature cane, and the discharge pattern trapped inside represents lightning (plasma occurring in nature). The “lightning in a bottle” effect is lively and colorful, with light moving freely inside the glass. The discharge pattern will respond to touch and sound. An example of many STEM principles, this sculpture can be displayed in a museum, science center, university, or any public space that would benefit from an attractive focal point.

Mark Ditzler Glass Studio has been producing kiln-formed glass art on commission for over 25 years. Project locations include hospitals, clinics, corporations, department stores, and fine residences. The studio has also completed several public art projects.

We specialize in fused glass wall panels, which are a unique alternative to framed wall art. They are easy to install, the colors are brilliant and never fade, and the glass is durable and easy to clean. Each panel features our signature twisted cane, made in the hot shop exclusively for the purpose of being re-melted into fused glass. This process exposes the beautiful inner structure of the cane to the viewer. The panels include other colorful details such as iridized glass, Italian-style murrini, gold or silver foils, and brilliant dichroic glass. These design elements are arranged in the kiln and the entire panel is fired to 1500 F, where it becomes one seamless piece. Once cooled, the panel has a reflective backing applied and it is mounted to 3/4" plywood, ready for installation. Mounting hardware is included.
